With the 20th anniversary of the sci-fi classic looming ahead, it finally appears that plans for an Independence Day sequel have finally been kicked into gear. Deadline are reporting that Fox is tapping Carter Blanchard to do a new and third draft of the Independence Day sequel, following Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin's first screenplay, before James Vanderbilt redrafted it for a second.

Although highly sought after in Hollywood, Blanchard is one of those names not yet tested by the box office. Currently having at least half a dozen completed screenplays in the works, the scribe is currently adapting Mark Millar’s Kindergarten Heroes for Fox and producer Simon Kinberg, and he just finished a draft of Spyhunter for Ruben Fleischer to direct at Warners.
