This is official. Gears of War will be released on Xbox One and yes it is currently in development.

Is this the best news for Xbox fans this year? Excluding of course confirmation of Halo 5 being released by Christmas, I think this may well be.

Gamertag editor speaking directly to Microsoft -

“Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the “Gears of War” franchise from Epic Games, including rights to all existing and future games, entertainment experiences and merchandise. In addition, we are excited to announce that Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will take over development of the “Gears of War” franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the “Gears of War” franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward.”

Now that Gears of War is part of the Microsoft Studios family, Black Tusk is able to leverage resources, technology, and experience from other first-party studios such as 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, Rare Ltd., Lionhead Studios, Good Science Studio, and Twisted Pixel Games.

Mix this wealth of knowledge and ability with the power of the Xbox One machine and a blockbuster name like Gears of War, it certainly inspires aspirations of grandeur and an end product sure to impress even the most hardened veteran gamers.

Think back, Black Tusk are responsible for that ultra cool looking trailer we witnessed at the E3 event last year portraying a still unknown, 30 second teaser VT portraying a Splinter Cell meets Perfect Dark thriller spy title snippet.

Remember? Well here’s a reminder.

According to Phill Spencer they have been “working through a plan” and they must “Reignite the franchise and grow it, it won't be a quick turn around”.

Very encouraging words there from Mr Spencer himself.

As excited as we are for the next Gears, we do not want to see another blockbuster title rushed through development to meet unrealistic deadlines resulting in a terminally ill, bug ridden title. They now have the opportunity to build on what many dynamics already exist within the title and move forward. Forward being the operative word, I am sure many agree that another prequel title will not be welcomed especially by the true fans of the COGs and let’s be honest there are hoards of us.

Further to this recent announcement Black Tusk are still to this day actively recruiting their ever growing Gears team who will work solely and religiously on Gears of War.

Reassuring news that our beloved Gears is now in a monogamous relationship with Microsoft.

"Black Tusk Studios are looking for a talented and driven Gameplay Designer with extensive experience on 3rd person shooter games, who has a passion for the Gears of War franchise. Your primary duties include gameplay systems design and tuning, prototyping innovative gameplay features, as well as difficulty and balance tuning. The ideal candidate will be a committed gamer, with proven experience designing gameplay features for highly rated 3rd person shooter games, and a passion for delivering new experiences to the core consumer."

"We are the official home of the Gears of War franchise and our objective is to forge the future of the IP" - Black Tusk job ads.

The movie

From the D-Pad to the D-box!

It is to Gamertag Gamings knowledge and ours alone (until now) that there may be a movie in the pipeline to Gears of War now that Microsoft own all rights to the franchise.

Dom - Gears of War
Dom - Gears of War

There has been no official reply from Microsoft on this but going on the evidence given of stock and asset movement it is on a certain amount of good authority that we can state that it is likely that talks are being had with a certain movie production company.

Not only is this a potential cash cow avenue for Xbox (not that they need it) but it may also actually be quite good.

Fans of the franchise will obviously go and watch the movie no matter what but even for non gamers this movie has the potential to rock even the non premium DBOX seats in the cinemas, with big men, big guns and even bigger bad guys it sort of screams, why has this not been done before?

Although there are mixed reviews out there towards the storylines within each chapter of the franchise, I am one of those that thought they were pretty darn good. Infestation and colonisation battles are always entertaining.

I see it being comparable to Total Recall (2013) meeting Battle for L.A with a hint of Starship Troopers. But that’s in my head. - Who would you have play Marcus Fenix and the crew?

With the latest in the series lacking pretty much everything that made the original great, I can wholeheartedly say that I am super psyched that Black Tusk have taken on this responsibility with such confidence and ability. I do believe that they will now be able to produce a quality addition to the once ‘Epic’ title.

From all out blood sport warfare to subtle stories of love and loss Gears of War manages to do it all. In addition to the sheer range of differing environments each character’s design greatly represents who they are down to their last detail. It is certainly an exciting time not just for gamers worldwide but for movie lovers everywhere. Action junkies be warned, you're about to get one hell of a fix!

Microsoft please don’t crunch our Gears again! We trust you.
