Movie Review: EDGE OF TOMORROW.
Directed By: Doug Liman.
Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson.
A soldier fighting in a war with aliens finds himself caught in a time loop of his last day in the battle, though he becomes better skilled along the way.
Edge Of Tomorrow is set in the near future and humans are being wiped out by these aliens called "Mimics". We have incredible weapon technology to assist us in battle and we have a plan to take the world from these Mimics, but they are always one step ahead.
Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible) plays Cage, an Officer who is thrust into this war, he is infected with a biological substance from a Mimic which allows him to relive that same day over and over again. He has to try and get better and better at fighting these aliens so he can win this war.
Emily Blunt (Looper) plays Rita aka The Full Metal Bitch who is just a complete bad ass when it comes to fighting and Tom Cruise discovers that the same thing had happened to her once. Her and Cage have to team up to try and figure out how to get to the source of the enemies power and stop the war.
I have been excited for Edge Of Tomorrow for a very long time, it was originally called "All You Need Is Kill" which I thought was an awesome title, the new title does make a lot more sense to the story though. With the trailers and posters, I thought this movie was going to be good but one that I ended up forgetting by the end of the year, but this movie is excellent!
Doug Liman directed this film and I'm a fan of his, he's done a few films that I've really enjoyed, most notably The Bourne Identity. He films action well but also has a good way with comedy and his style is perfect for this film.
Tom Cruise is one of the best action stars in movies today, he always fully commits to a role, doing all the stunts but he almost always gives great performances. I actually didn't mind his film last year, Oblivion. But he is really good here, not once did I think that it was just Tom Cruise in a movie, he disappeared into this role and he actually played a very different character to what he usually does. Emily Blunt is also really good in the movie, I'm always impressed by her performances.
Edge Of Tomorrow is the most surprising movie I've seen all year, like I said I thought it was going to be good, but this movie blew me away, it's one of the best Science Fiction films I have ever seen. This is as good as films like Aliens, Terminator, Looper, Inception, it's absolutely fantastic!
This is definitely a film that must be seen, and I really recommend that you go out and see it because it's one of the best movies of the year and I don't think it's going to make as much money as it deserves.
The world is in a state of war and everyone is being thrown into battle. Cruise plays Cage who is an Officer of the US Military and he blackmails a general to try and get out of fighting, he is then arrested and sent off to battle. In battle he kills an Alpha Mimic, this alien's blood lands on Cage and he is infected with a gene that makes him relive the exact same day over and over. He keeps reliving this day, getting better and better at not being killed and he eventually meets Emily Blunt's character who once had the same thing happen to her, they work together to try and find the source of the enemies power, if they can destroy that, they can end the war.
The movie is entertaining from start to finish, it has the right amount of exposition, the right amount of humor and is absolutely action packed! The humor comes from his Groundhog Day type situation, he has to relive the same moments over and over and eventually he just knows the day word by word and that gets really funny. I thought that aspect of the film was just going to get really boring, really fast but it has a way of keeping the humor fresh and light and I admire it for that. Those scenes are edited so well, there is really a montage of them training and him failing and having to die and wake up again and it was so fast paced and funny that I was engaged at all times.
With the Bourne Identity, Liman used a very fast style of editing for his action scenes and used quite a bit of shaky cam, he doesn't do that here and uses some really good wide shots so that you can see every thing that's happening in regards to action. The visual effects in the film are also incredibly good, probably the best of the year so far, especially in the last act where I was just blown away by how great it looked. The Mimics in the movie which are the aliens were really cool, they didn't just go for the standard movie martian, they were so quick and erratic that you had to keep your eyes of screen or else you'd miss them, but at times they'd slow down so you could get a good look at them and they were really well designed, they actually looked very creepy.
Edge Of Tomorrow is a non stop ride from the moment it starts to the moment it ends. It's funny, its emotionally compelling and the action is mind blowing. I almost forgot to mention the relationship between Cruise and Blunt in the film is fantastic, they had great chemistry and it was heart breaking every time that the day had to start again because Blunt's character wouldn't remember Cruise's character because he is the only one that can remember the things happening. There is one scene in a barn with the two leads that was brilliantly done, that's where you see that Cage is just sick of seeing Rita die every day and he just wants it to be over.
By the end of the film I thought it was going to have a really dark and depressing ending but it brings it right back by the end of the film with a bit of humor and I loved it! If I had one complaint with the film, its that I thought it could have been longer, easily another 20 minutes but that's because I would have liked to see a bit more of the relationship between Cage and Rita.
I will definitely be going back to see this film again, like I said, this is one of the best Science Fiction films I've ever seen and I implore you to go out and see it. It's funny, thrilling, action packed and excellently executed, I think I'm actually going to go out and buy the book of the film after seeing this. All the performances were fantastic and the characters felt real, they all had good character arcs ad I was just blown away. I'm giving [Edge of Tomorrow](movie:267902) an A!
