Are you sitting down? You're not carrying any hot liquids or sharp objects? Good, because this news might make you a little bit upset.
According to The Daily Star, Twilight actor Robert Pattinson is apparently the front-runner in a shortlist to play the rebooted Indiana Jones. There, I said it.
The British tabloid states that Hollywood sources claim the 28-year old Pattinson is currently tipped as the favorite by Disney. Although, Harrison Ford seems content to bring back Han Solo for some more outings, it seems the House of Mouse has decided the 71-year old is now too old to play Indiana Jones again. The Daily Stars insider stated:
Disney is looking at its long-term options for the Indiana Jones franchise. They feel that the series has huge potential on many levels, starting with the films leading to other spin-offs like games which can generate more money than movies. Rob is top of the initial list because he has showed his acting stripes away from Twilight. But the competition will be stiff.
Despite attempting to distance himself both personally and professionally from the Twilight franchise, Pattinson still might not find a lot a lot of love and support in the mainstream audience for this casting.
However, this news has reminded us that one day Disney will want to reboot the Indiana Jones franchise. That's clearly inevitable. With this as our basis, I've done a quick whip around the office to see what some more popular Indiana Jones casting choices might be. Take a look below:
Any Indiana Jones actor needs to be able to mix skills with a six-shooter and bull-whip with a casual charm and rugged demeanor. Basically, they need to be a bit like Bradley Cooper. His comedic and action chops have been established by the likes of The A-Team and The Hangover, while roles in films such as A Place Beyond The Pines and Silver Linings Playbook means he'll also appeal to the more serious cinephiles.
Chris Pine seems to be the go-to guy for cinematic reboots. Not only did be bring the iconic Captain James T. Kirk back for Star Trek, but he also landed in the boots of another Harrison Ford character, Jack Ryan, in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Although this latter role might not have generated much heat, most felt he did a good job of reviving Captain Kirk. He especially found that balance between cocky arrogance and rustic heroic passion - something any Indy actor would also have to nail.
Now Channing Tatum might not be the most rugged on this list - his appearance in Magic Mike proved he's basically hairless from the eye brows down - but his filmography certain makes for an impressive blend of comedy and action. Having said that, work in films such as [Foxcatcher](movie:264060) and Side Effects also shows this guy isn't a one trick pony with no depth. Give that guy some stubble and I'm sure he could become our Indy.
Chris Pratt seems to be dominating cinema at the minute by filling that role as the charming, funny but also flawed action hero. After arriving out of Parks and Recreation, the 34 year old actor still has yet to generate a massive filmography as a leading man. But with [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073) (in which he plays a rather Indy-ish character) and [Jurassic World](movie:32752) soon to release, Chris Pratt could muster up the mainstream love to play a role like Indiana Jones.
Robert Downey Jr.
I know, I know. This ones a bit self-indulgent. Robert Downey Jr. isn't exactly young, but he has established himself as a much-loved purveyor of comedy-action. If Tony Stark was around in the 1930s, I'd like to think he'd a bit like Indy, while Downey Jr's performance in Sherlock Holmes shows he can still stay charming in a different time period. I mean, come on, try and tell me he doesn't look good in that hat.
As I said above, with Disney snapping up beloved franchises like their going out of fashion, it really is only a matter of time until we see Indiana Jones again on the big screen.
Who would you like to see as Indiana Jones?
