Rhys Ifans has just been cast in the James Bobin-directed sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, as the father of Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter.
Ifans is set to play Zanik Hightopp, who cannot hide his bright-colored hair beneath a top hat. The thesp is actually four years younger than Depp in real life, though the actors' ages don't really matter, as both will doubtless be head-to-toe in prosthetics... The magic of cinema!
Hightopp is a brand new character - one that is nowhere to be seen in Lewis Carroll's books. I suppose this goes to show that Disney will be taking some creative leeway again, which worked fairly well with Alice in Wonderland, in my opinion.
A talented actor, Ifans is known best for his roles in Notting Hill and CBS's Elementary, but he knows his way around an effects-heavy movie role, too, having played The Lizard in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man.
What do you think about Ifans lending his weirdness to Through the Looking Glass?
