Warning, if you haven't caught the Vampire Diaries season 5 finale yet, SPOILERS are very much below.

So. Damon.

It's not good news.

As in, 'Ian Somerhalder Instagramming his gravestone' not good news.

Which, after his whole season 5 finale experience of being stuck on the Other Side, is probably not the best of signs. Especially with the attached caption: "Rest in Peace Damon Salvatore. :("

Is it confirmation that he won't be returning next season though? Well, from the looks of it, it's possible that he both is, and isn't.

Julie Plec, the show's co-creator, has already confirmed that both Somerhalder and Kat Graham (who plays the similarly trapped Bonnie) will return next season - but she was deliberately unclear about in what capacity they would do so:

"There's a mystery attached to how the [season] ended...Did they die? Did they find peace? Are they still on the Other Side? Does the Other Side still exist? If not, where the hell are they? And will they ever come back? Certainly, we will see Ian [Somerhalder] and Kat [Graham] again, but where and in what context? That's part of the mystery of season six."

So, that gravestone? That could be confirmation that Somerhalder will only be back in ghostly or flashback form - or that he's just a big tease.

Either way, only time - and season 6 of [The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) will tell...

What do you guys think? Is this confirmation that Damon won't be returning from the Other Side?
