It turns out some of those Star Wars: Episode VII casting rumors were actually based on fact! We've just heard that recent Oscar winner and 12 Years A Slave star, Lupita Nyong'o, will be appearing in the J.J. Abrams directed return of the franchise.
However, she's not alone in the casting news. Lucasfilm also announced that [Game of Thrones](movie:817617) actress, Gwendoline Christie, will also be joining the sci-fi action.
Here's the original statement from Lucasfilm:
Lupita Nyong’o joins the recently announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. This year, her breakthrough performance in 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in the production. She can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. “I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
The casting of Nyong'o adds further credence to rumors that she could be appearing as the conflicted Sith mistress, Asajj Ventress. Currently, there's no confirmation of any of the roles, but the rumors have been circulating for sometime. Asajj Ventress is a character who appears extensively in the extended lore of Star Wars. However, much of her involvement seems limited to the pre-New Hope Trilogy so it will be unclear how she can be weaved into this later narrative - if at all.
It's also still unclear if we can expect more Star Wars casting news in the future, but I wouldn't be surprised if Abrams has a few more secrets up his sleeves.
Excited for this casting?
