On This Day In Film

Big was a film that I clearly remember from my childhood and when I was researching the film I noticed that 1988 was a pretty good year for film. Looking at the film releases of the year I made an average score between RottenTomatoes.com, Metascore and IMDb and made a top 10 list. Where there was only two scores available, an average was taken of those two. Anyway, here it is:

10 - Hairspray

RT = 97% M = 77 IMDB = 6.9 Total = 81/100

9 - Dead Ringers

RT = 83% M = 86 IMDB = 7.4 Total = 81/100

8 - Dangerous Liaisons

RT = 93% M = 74 IMDB = 7.7 Total 81.3/100

7 - Akira

RT = 87% M = 76 IMDB = 8.1 Total = 81.3/100

6 - Die Hard

RT = 92% M = 70 IMDB = 8.3 Total = 81.7/100

5 - A Fish Called Wanda

RT = 93% M = 80 IMDB = 7.6 Total = 83/100

4 - The Unbearable Lightness of Being

RT = 95 M = N/A IMDB = 7.4 Total = 84.5/100

3 - Big

RT = 97% M = N/A IMDB = 7.3 Total = 85/100

2 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit

RT = 98% M = 83 IMDB = 7.7 Total = 86/100

1 - My Neighbor Totoro

RT = 92% M = N/A IMDB = 8.3 Total = 87.5/100

There are quite a few films that don't make this list, some that you might be surprised about. For example, Rain Man doesn't make it, the high grossing film of the year in the US, coming in with a score of 78.3/100. There's also Heathers, Bull Durham, Working Girl, Beetlejuice, Cocktail, Beaches, Coming to America and many more.

I think it's fair to say that 1988 was a good year in film, it's scary to think that it was 26 years ago!
