The latest movie from the Wachowskis' has been delayed until next year.
Upcoming sci-fi action/adventure Jupiter Ascending from Andy and Lana Wachowski, best know for directing The Matrix, has been pushed back by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow from a July 2014 release date by more than half a year to February 2015.
Variety reports that a 'need to finish extensive special effects' is the reason behind the 7 month delay. The extra time will be devoted to the film's 2,000+ SFX shots.
The film starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum has been predicted by many box office analysts to be one of 2014 biggest flops. Don't believe me? Just do a search online for 'box office bombs of 2014' and you'll probably see this movie on the top most people's lists.
The Wachowskis haven't really had a major box office hit since The Matrix trilogy ended. Their adaptation of Speed Racer bombed at the box office in 2008 with an estimated loss of $73M.
The directing duo's most recent movie, Cloud Atlas faired slightly better earning $130M worldwide, but considering it had a $102M budget it's results weren't exactly stellar and certainly not what Warner Bros. were hoping for.
Jupiter Ascending will now open on the same weekend that proved successful for Warner Bros. last year with The Lego Movie. Delaying the release of a film can work out in some circumstances (World War Z, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) but February has never been the strongest month at the box office compared to its original summer slot.
What do you think of the new release date? Will Jupiter Ascending be a box office bomb or a hit?
Jupiter Ascending will now be release on February 6th, 2015.
