If there is any movie to suffer the wrath of controversy, it is Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel Sequel” Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is a film that has been on every comic book reader’s wish list since the dawn of time. Was that a little extreme? Meh, maybe, but a Batman vs. Superman match up has been long wanted by any reader of the comics. Has been long waited for by any DC animated watcher. Has been highly anticipated by every movie lover since the first Batman film in 1989 and the Superman movie of 1978. It has NEVER been done, and if Snyder has his way, he will undoubtedly create the most epic superhero clash of recent history. Possibly outdoing Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012.
With high expectation and demand, it NEEDS to be successful and here are my reasons why:
1. They Are OGs of DC Comics!
When Superman, played by Christopher Reeve, first made his way to the big screen, it was a pioneer in comic book history for any super hero to make his/her way from page to big screen. Granted, I wasn't even considered to be born before it made its way, but I do vaguely remember the film and it was the glimmer of hope that childhood superheroes are profitable to mass audiences. The technology back then was top notch for its time, but we are in an era of big budget comic book films now. The graphics have drastically improved where you can make a man fly faster than the speed of sound while making it feel as real as the air you breathe.
Batman (1989) was on a-whole-nother level. Played by Michael Keaton, some will say it is the best incarnation of the dark knight ever! He nailed the role down to the threading of the cape. In my humble opinion though, I believe Nolan's version of Batman with actor Christian Bale had the best balance (minus the scratchy voice). Seriously how did he NOT need a lifetime supply of Halls? He probably did. Anyway, with the improvement of technology and the revamp of Batman’s legacy with Christopher Nolan in the director’s chair, fans were wet in their eyes. It was a much needed breath of fresh air after, *ahem*, Batman & Robin.
These two NEED to share the same screen!
2. Man of Steel Didn't Sit Well With Fans?!
I thought [Man of Steel](movie:15593) was to Superman Returns, as Batman Begins was to Batman & Robin. It was to revitalize and revamp the image of the man in blue. I honestly liked this version of Superman a lot better. Superman Returns had a somber tone but NO ACTION! Please tell me the best action scene that depicted the Man of Steel the best. Don’t worry I’ll wait? Oh, the scene where a bullet is crushed as it meets his eyeball? With all his power, the best way they showed it off was him catching a falling airplane mid-flight? Come on! What Man of Steel did was open our eyes to pure Superman strength. The main difference with this film versus its recent predecessor is that in this one, Superman went against another Kryptonian with the same powers he has. Of course there will be destruction. He is FINALLY accepting his gifts and learning to control them. OF COURSE there will be destruction. This is the FIRST time he has ever had to go toe to toe with an enemy as strong as he is. Do I have to say it? OF COURSE THERE WILL BE DESTRUCTION! He will make mistakes and he has to learn from them. He will have to live with the consequences of killing, and that in turn will mold him into the “boy scout” we all know and love. He won’t kill. Man of Steel employed visual effects that have never been seen before. Visually it was a masterpiece. But fans could not get over the fact that Superman laid waste to the city he was supposed to protect. Fans were outraged that Zack Snyder went this route, and for that, this “sequel” needs to be done right. There has to be a perfect balance of story, action, plot, and tone. What Snyder will have to do is balance Superman, matching strength and wisdom. I believe he will accomplish this.
My final reason…
3. Dawn of Justice HAS To Set Up Justice League Even With The Backlash!
When the sequel to Man of Steel was announced, fans got psyched. When it was brought to the stage that it would be Batman Vs. Superman, fans shut down the arena. When the FIRST casting choice was revealed, after months of speculation, that Ben Affleck was cast as Batman, mainstream media (internet, TV, & Radio) was shut down! Fans went CRAZY! I’ve written a fair number of articles for Moviepilot. The ones that garner the most views and opinions are the ones about this film, both positive and negative! From rumors, to odd castings, the people have very strong emotions for their favorite superheroes. If they are to come together for a cinematic venture, something needs to make sense. Ben Affleck cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne made ZERO sense. But when the first image of him dressed in cape and cowl hit Twitter, I along with MANY fans, got goosebumps. Jesse Eisenberg cast as Lex Luthor didn’t make sense logically, but could he change our minds? Possibly. Jesse is a very talented actor, and the direction they are going with this film makes sense to have an actor that can play wit, charm, sarcasm, and swag all in one persona. Then we have Gal Gadot cast as Wonder Woman. Ok honestly it STILL doesn’t make sense to me. Sorry, just being honest. I would have much preferred Gina Carano. No offense to Gadot, but when I think of Wonder Woman, I think of a female at the top of her game with athletic finesse, a fit body, and a bad ass attitude mixed with pure subtlety. We also have Victor Stone aka Cyborg making an appearance as well as other possible cameos.
Snyder and team will have to tread lightly. The script will have to be tight, and the direction will have to be on point, because if this movie fails…There is NO TELLING how bad of a taste it will leave in our mouths.
They have extended the production time and release date is now set until May 2016. They need to take their time and make it RIGHT.
We All Deserve it!
