Charlie Hunnam of [Sons of Anarchy](series:201186) was recently announced as Christian Grey in the highly anticipated adaptation of the worldwide bestseller [Fifty Shades of Grey](movie:391697); it was then quickly reported that he had left the project.

The press release claimed that the reason he had to leave the project was due to scheduling conflicts with the shooting of the final season of Sons of Anarchy.

Here is the official statement from Universal and Focus Features:

The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.

Hunnam spoke more this week at the Hauding Film Awards about his departure from Fifty Shades of Grey:

I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place.

Hunnam had already began prepping the role and had put some time into crafting his character when the decision was made.

When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him. It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.

A few names have been mentioned in the wake of Hunnam's decision such as:

Alexander Skarsgard

Matt Bomer

and Theo James

...but ultimately the directors choice was Jamie Dornan.

Hunnam had a few words to say on the decision:

I'm sure he'll do a great job, I don't really know his work, but I know [director Sam Taylor-Johnson] is amazing, and she has fantastic taste, so I'm sure he'll do a great job.

It's good to see that there's no bad blood on Hunnam's part as he is seemingly continuing to support the film.

Who would you cast as Christian Grey?
