Ever since Marvel released Civil War, fanboys and fangirls have been begging for the massive event to come to the big screen. As the MCU continues to develop and become broader, many fans are hoping [The Avengers 3](movie:738027) will be the Civil War storyline. Fans point to the fact that Sebastian Stan has signed on for 8 movies, and Civil War would lead to the story that lets Bucky take over as Captain America. The corruption in SHIELD also gives signs that a civil war could happen.

But sadly, we're not going to see what many argue to be one of the best Marvel crossover stories on the screen until 2018, and maybe even later. The main argument being that Sony and Fox have the rights to Spider-Man and the X-Men, the problem being that Civil War needs Spider-Man in the movie, and having the X-Men in it would be important as well.

Licensing has nothing to do with the problem though. As Will from Will's Wars (the youtube series that attracted me to this site, go check him out, he has great stuff) "We all know Marvel Studios, Sony, and Fox love money boners". A crossover including the X-Men and members of the Spider-Man will eventually show up. I have faith that either the studios will come to some agreement, or Marvel Studios will buy the rights to both franchises.

So why, do you ask, will we not get a Civil War movie for Avengers 3? The Infinity Gauntlet.

It's obvious with the post credit scenes Marvel is so famous for, that we are heading for an Infinity Gauntlet storyline. The Infinity Gems (or stones in the MCU), have been mentioned as the Aether and the Tesseract. Additionally, we've not only had a Thanos post-credit scene, but he has recently been cast in Josh Brolin. This means we're bound to see the wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet appear in a major role in an upcoming film.

Having the first Marvel crossover be a major team-up like the Infinity Gauntlet is much more important for storyline reasons and for character development. Why I say this is we can't throw the characters into a civil war without them even knowing each other. The Infinity Gauntlet will act much like Avengers one, brining a team together. It will serve the purpose of exposing the characters to each other. Again, take [The Avengers](movie:9040) as an example. The purpose of the movie was to have the Avengers get to know each other, and become a team. The Infinity Gauntlet will act the same way. The MCU, as one whole entity, will spend the movie getting to know each other and fight together for a common cause.

The best way to do this is have the different groups try to fight Thanos by themselves. Have the Avengers go up and fail, then the X-Men, then Spider-Man and [The Fantastic Four](movie:34667). They all fail, and then Nick Fury can bring everyone together, and although there might be some heroes that don't get along at first, they all learn how to work together and unite to fight Thanos. The reason Civil War was so powerful is that it had best friends going against each other, teams splitting up, even lovers going against each other. With the characters barely knowing each other, throwing the first major crossover movie right into Civil War would not be as powerful, and would not work as well.

I have no doubt that the MCU will one day all be under one license and universe, and that day could be a lot sooner than a lot of us think. I also have no doubt that we will eventually get Civil War in one of the greatest superhero movies of all time, but only if Marvel doesn't rush into it and does it right.
