It has been a few years since we have had a good tearjerker showdown playing out in theaters. This year we are getting fabulous one. The Fault in Our Stars is coming out this June weekend closely followed by the August release of If I Stay. Both are novel adaptations, both have teen love stories winding through tragedy, and both are set to break our hearts some? So, which will be better?

Lets start with The Fault in Our Stars. The directors and producers made a smart move by putting Shailene Woodley as the lead, she has proven herself in many different genres and seems to be the new face of young Hollywood. Along with her costar Ansel Elgort, she will be delivering a performance of a young teen dying from cancer and finding love at what may be the very end of her life. She has to figure out how to deal with this dilemma, as love is the ultimate way of living, even in the face of death.

Next there is If I Stay. Chloe Mortetz, who is a pro at many genres, takes the lead as Mia, a teen Cello player who falls for the ultra cool local teen musician in what would seem to be a love story over music. Wrong…This is a love story in a way, but one in which one is in between life and death, and the other doesn’t know it. Mia finds herself in a coma after a catastrophic freak car accident and is somehow awake and out of body. She can see everyone and hear everything but isn’t sure what to do next or how to do it. There are flashbacks occurring of her family, who died in the wreck, moments of people talking to her in the coma unaware she can hear, and the fact her boyfriend is breaking down pleading for her to come back before her very…conscious. This story can be gut-wrenchingly sad at points and realistically beautiful at others.

So which is better? Ok, for once, I call a tie. Both have fantastic casts and I loved both books. Both have trailers which show two very well adapted movies. What do you think?
