Big news for fans of the Divergent series: Naomi Watts is set to join the franchise with the upcoming Insurgent. According to THR, she's signed on the dotted line to play Evelyn, leader of the Factionless, in not only Insurgent, but both movies adapted from the third novel in the series, Allegiant.
The exact nature of her role is substantially SPOILER-y, but if you're inclined to know without having to Google it, you can check out a key detail below:
She's also Four's mother. Which, if you haven't seen the first film, will mean absolutely nothing to you at all. You're welcome.
She'll join Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet and Miles Teller, all of whom return from the first film, and will most likely begin filming almost immediately, with shooting having begun in Atlanta last week. Critical darling Octavia Spencer will also be joining the cast for the sequel.
Robert Schwentke is directing, taking over from Divergent director Neil Burger, working from a screenplay by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.
With Divergent having made a respectable $267 million worldwide, producers of the dystopian series, adapted from Veronica Roth's wildly popular YA novels, will be hoping for at least the same from the sequel.
[Insurgent](movie:949018) is set for release in 2015.
What do you guys think? Is Watts a good choice for Evelyn?
