This weekend, teens and adults all over have been stocking up on tissues and boxes of chocolate due to the release of the new movie, The Fault in Our Stars. Based on the popular YA novel written by John Green, TFIOS follows the story of two cancer kids and their star-crossed love story. The movie was a tearjerker and almost everyone left the theater with mascara stains on their shirts or an empty box of Kleenex.
The film, directed by Josh Boone, had only a 12 million dollar budget and was going head to head with Tom Cruise's new movie, The Edge of Tomorrow, which had a budget of over 175 million! In a live chat with his fans on Wednesday, the author, John Green, told his fans that he really wanted TFIOS to win the weekend box office. From the looks of things, John Green's wish will come true.
In special showings on Thursday the film took in 8.2 million and the tearjerker also broke records for pre-sales, becoming the biggest pre-selling romantic drama in Fandango's history. Friday night scored The Fault in Our Stars 26.1 million, guaranteeing the number one spot this weekend. TFIOS is the box office surprise of the Summer, showing Hollywood that you don't need explosives to entertain viewers. The edge of Tomorrow took in around 10 million Friday night, and some are predicting it may come in 3rd place this weekend. The Fault in Our Stars was the little movie that could this weekend, and is set to take in over 50 million at the end of the weekend box office.
The two leads in 'Fault', Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley both starred in the movie adaption of the book, Divergent, in March and are currently filming the sequel, Insurgent. Divergent also impressed at the box office, proving that book adaptions really are taking over Hollywood.
