The Vampire Diaries and Game of Thrones are wildly different shows, but why are Mystic Falls enthusiasts quaking in their boots over HBO's smash hit fantasy drama?
The answer is simple. Deaths.
[Game of Thrones](movie:817617) is well known for it's gung ho attitude towards killing off beloved main characters and, because this bloodthirsty format it raking in the ratings, [The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) fans are worried writers could be just as brutal when it comes to exterminating fan favourites.
Both The Vampire Diaries and Game of Thrones are based on a series of books, but the paths they have taken couldn't be more different. CW's TVD had diverged from the path of the books so wildly, that the only constant remnant is the characters names. On the other hand, GoT is following the storylines in the book consistently, if a little out of sequence.
If you are a Game of Thrones fan, it is easy for you to find out the fate of a character with a simple Google, but thing are more complicated for those concerned about their favourite Vampire Diaries character.
I think this, as well as fear that the writers will be tempted to deliver a gripping thrill ride of deaths, is part of TVD fan's fear.
If ratings dip, writers can do whatever they please to shake them up a bit in the Mystic Falls universe, and a character death is a great way to do this. The Vampire Diaries is well known for only killing off minor characters 'for good', but it doesn't mean things will stay this way.
Fans are concerned that the overuse of tactics to bring characters back to life is getting stale and at some point, things will have to get brutal. How many times can people really be bought back from the Other Side or turned into vampires to escape mortality before people don't even care about a 'death' any more?
The Vampire Diaires has been running for 5 seasons now, so maybe this is time for writers to have a drastic change in direction. Riding along on the coattails of Game of Thrones brutality will only take the show so far though. There are comparatively few characters to kill off, and what is really needed is new dynamics and fresh blood.
No wonder Ian Somerhalder refused to return unless Enzo got a major part in the show, if the lead actor thinks that things need shaking up a bit to keep Mystic Falls ticking over, the writers should really listen.
Do you think The Vampire Diaries could benefit from more REAL deaths or are you terrified for your favourite characters lives?
