I love Fantasy movies for many reasons - they're inventive, visually stunning and full of incredible possibilities. But the best thing of all? The EPIC BATTLES.

Here are my 10 All-Time Favorite, 10-Warhammers-Out-of-10, Fantastical Battles of Epic Proportions...

1. Thermopylae, 300

300 is basically one intense, incredible battle from start to finish, but the final stand at Thermopylae viscerally reimagines one of the most iconic moments in Hellenic History. Blood, guts and Gerard Butler abound.

2. Department of Mysteries, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter has always been pretty dark for a children's series, but in Order of the Phoenix, s**t got real. The kids face down grown adults in a barrage of deadly curses - and we get a Dumbledore-Voldy face-off. FANTASTIC.

3. The Storming of Mount Tartarus, Immortals

I have honestly never been quite so impressed with a movie fight. The glimmering golden Immortals are hypnotic, tearing chunks out of Hyperion's army - as well as the scheming Titans.

4. The Fall of Ilium, Troy

I'm calling Fantasy here for Godly interference and the mix of myth with history (not to mention a fair amount of Hollywood license!) However, the striking battle scenes are reassuringly real...and gory.

5. Battle of the Blackwater, Game of Thrones

What makes Game of Thrones great is its unpredictability. The recent episode 'The Watchers on The Wall' was an epic battle, but my fave is still the Season Two stalwart, 'Blackwater'. Warring factions clash on the Blackwater Bay in a dazzling display of wildfire, ingenuity and naked brutality. Remember Tyrion's stirring words: 'Those are brave men knocking at our door, let's go kill them!'

6. The Battle of the Five Armies, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

OK, so this is one battle we haven't seen yet (dammit, can't it just be December already?) but Come On! The Battle of the Five Armies is the towering climax of the Hobbit, and you know Jackson will make it worth our while!

7. The Battle at Isla de Muerta, Pirates of The Caribbean

Swashbuckling, thy name is Jack Sparrow. It's truly a treat to see an obscenely large Hollywood budget being used in such a joyful and exciting way, with a great mix of character-driven charm and daring swordplay. Shiver me timbers!

8. The Skeleton Army, Jason and the Argonauts

In 1963, Ray Harryhausen was at the peak of his powers, culminating in this bony tour-de-force: Jason and his Argonauts fight an army of skeletons hatched from Hydra's teeth! The best animatronic action EVER.

9. The 74th Games, The Hunger Games

Surprisingly uplifting for a movie about a ton of kids killing each other, The Hunger Games has the impressive methods-of-dispatch range of an 80's horror movie, from the bloody Cornucopia through to the final survivors.

10. The Battle of Pelennor, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Surely, the most epic fantasy battle of all time? All the hopes and fears of Middle Earth rest on this battle! The Witch King is finally defeated! Besides, when Legolas felled that Oliphaunt, I've never heard a cinema cheer so loudly.
