On This Day In Film

Here is a selection of events in film that occured on 14th June. Follow me @onthisdayinfilm for more updates.

1996, saw the release of The Cable Guy...

This film starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick is one of the first films that Judd Apatow produced. Apatow has since given us Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Superbad (2007) amongst many other classic comedy films. The Cable Guy was met with mixed reviews and I must admit that I wasn't sure about it when I first saw it. But I have watched it since and really like it, Carrey is as funny as ever and I like the comedic take on the psychological thrillers that dominated the 90s. See it if you haven't, and give it a rewatch if you have to mark its 18th birthday.

1991, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was released...

23 years ago today this version of the Robin Hood legend was released. The film starred Kevin Costner as Robin Hood and Morgan Freeman as his right hand man, Azeem. It was the 3rd highest grossing film worldwide in 1991, behind Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Beauty and the Beast. Alan Rickman won the Best Supporting Actor award at the BAFTAs for his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham and the song "(Everything I Do) I Do it For You" performed by Bryan Adams was nominated for an Oscar. The song was a huge success, especially in the UK, where it spent 16 consecutive weeks at No.1 in the Singles Chart, the longest in its history. Not the greatest film ever, but a perfect film for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

1957, saw the birth of Jay Roach...

The director and producer Jay Roach is 57 today. Roach has given us an abundence of comedy films over the years including directing the Austin Powers movies, the Meet the... series and Borat and Bruno. He also directed the Emmy winning film for TV Recount, dramatising the US presidential election in 2000, starring Kevin Spacey, Laura Dern and John Hurt. He also has a film coming out in 2015, The Nest, that he is producing, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. MIght be worth seeing!
