This week saw the release of two films that both happen to be sequels as well as being eagerly anticipated for. 22 Jump Street Sequel to the 2012 film 21 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 both did fantastic at the Box Office this week. I’m honestly quite surprised as I haven’t seen this small of a gap between two premiering films in quite awhile. Now as you can already tell 22 Jump Street managed to premiere at number one this weekend with an estimated total of 60,000,000 which is not only impressive considering it’s a rated R comedy film, but perhaps more importantly is that it managed to be the highly anticipated How to Train Your Dragon 2 which has a much wider appeal as it’s targeted towards kids. Dragons on the other hand while still opening in second place it still did an impressive job in my book considering how long the wait was between the original film and that it only got beat by a mere 10 million. I expect we’ll probably see both films remain near the top of the box office in the coming weeks.
Now in regards to films that have been out I think I must bring up that last week’s number one film The Fault in our Stars has take a huge drop to fifth place this week as did Edge of Tomorrow that managed to only drop from third to fourth. Which while not much of a dip compared to Stars it is a shame that it still got beat out by Maleficent. One other film I’d like to bring up is Godzilla which still continues to to great at the Box Office, especially with it now playing in China as of this weekend where it had the biggest opening day in that region on Friday and went onto make an estimated 25.7 million. I really can’t wait to see what how well Godzilla does in China as I really think Legendary and WB were very smart with the releasing of this film as it will continue to bring in money all summer long. Not to mention that the film has yet to open in Godzilla’s country of origin Japan. But when it does I can already see it’s going to break records.
