The Game of Thrones Season 4 finale was chock full of surprising moments, most of which were fairly unpredictable - unless, like me, you failed to navigate the sea of Game of Thrones spoilers that is the internet.
However, the seemingly shocking arrival of Stannis' cavalry north of the Wall, although surprisingly, had been hinted at long before in Season 3. In fact, although it might be tough to remember considering Stannis spent most of this season sulking on Dragonstone or trying to get a bank loan in Braavos, at the end of Season 3, Stannis did agree to finally provide the assistance the Night's Watch desperately needed. I always love these George R.R. Martin videos, he often talks as if what he's saying is solid gold historical fact. Personally, I wouldn't mind just listening to him relay the Game of Thrones story for an hour each week.
