Transformers: Age of Extinction is just over a week away and there are some that still have doubt in its director, Michael Bay. From the average person like myself, to movie channels with "YouTube Fame" (CinemaSins & ScreenJunkies) has something to say about this "beloved" franchise.
Personally, I liked Bay's iteration of the robots in disguise. Sure, it has strayed away a little from its source material, but what Michael Bay was able to accomplish was giving us 2 hours of non-stop entertainment, and explosions! Yes, I actually like the explosions. The cinematography in these films are amazing and untouchable. When the FIRST Transformers movie came to our eyes way back in 2007, excellent CGI effects were still pretty much in their infant stage. The realism portrayed on these giant robots was and still is uncanny. Nevertheless, Bay has fallen under scrutiny for "tearing up our childhood." Well, if you are member of A.B.O. (Anti-Bay Organization), I have 3 reasons why [Transformers: Age of Extinction](movie:206531) could potentially rebirth the Transformers Franchise.
A Semi-New Story:
Four years after the events of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, a mechanic and his daughter discover a deactivated Optimus Prime. Meanwhile, a powerful, ingenious businessman and a group of scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control. - Wikipedia
The humans have not forgotten the events that took place on that day. They fear the Tranformers more than ever now and have been hunting them down. I like the fact that the setting of this movie has been time elapsed. It will show us that a lot has changed over the years and that nothing will be the same. This will not be your typical Decepticon invasion with Megatron trying to take over the Earth. That was the case for the last 3 previous films with slightly different variants.
Age of Extinction will pit a new foe on the turf that the Autobots will have to deal with. Of course there will be some Autobot and Decepticon clashes, however I believe that there will be a different plot now. A brand new "Decepticon" is on the scene in search of Optimus Prime for unknown reasons. The Autobots will not only have to defend themselves against this enemy, but also against the humans as they have their own secret weapon. This will change the scenery up just a bit and might give us a breath of fresh air. I do hope that they focus more on the Transformers than the human element. We want to see Robots vs Robots. Not Robots vs Personal Human Conflict vs Robots vs Humans.
All New Cast & Characters:
There is a fresh breath of air with a whole new cast for the franchise. Transformers: Age of Extinction will star:
Mark Wahlberg - Cade Yeager, a single father and struggling inventor
Stanley Tucci - Joshua Gross, an arrogant designer who wants to build his own robots
Nicola Peltz - Tessa Yeager, Cade's daughter
Jack Reynor - Shane Dyson, Tessa's boyfriend and a race car driver
Kelsey Grammer - Harold Attinger, a paranoid government official
Li Bingbing - Su Yueming, the "CEO of the Chinese Transformers"
The main cast looks outstanding. Adding Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Kelsey Grammer to the list will only add to the credibility that Bay is potentially taking this film seriously. Like I said about the story, there is more to it than just robot on robot. A designer that wants to build his own robots, a paranoid govt. official, and *Ahem* a CEO OF THE CHINESE TRANSFORMERS?? Ok, the last one I'm not too sure about, but nevertheless, these ingredients will only add to the plot's pot.
We also have brand new Autobots with the exception of fan favorite Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. Drift will be bad ass with his close quarter's combat, and Hound I believe will add the macho, comedic, oomph that is needed to complete a team. There a few Decepticons added. We have Galvatron who is basically the resurrected Megatron, Stinger who is the Decepticon we saw that dematerialized and reformed in one trailer, and Lockdown who is the bounty hunter.
Last but Not Least. DINOBOTS!!
Need I say anything? I do? *Sigh*. The Autobots face a new threat, and they will have to seek the help of the long-forgotten Dinobots. It has been hinted that Optimus already knew of their existence, so WHY did it take 4 movies to introduce them? Well, for starters, they wouldn't have been introduced in the first Transformers film. The theory can go either way. Either (a) Michael Bay just felt like it wasn't necessary before and after the "hate" he has received, decided to save his ass by finally giving the audience something they would want; or (b) The threat wasn't high enough to recruit them. If this is the case, we can be prepared to see what the story will unfold in this film. Mark Wahlberg has promised us "It will blow us away." The Dinobots are MASSIVE creatures. Each Autobot can ride one with no problem. I can't wait to see what destruction they will bring. They wont be as reluctant to join in the beginning, but Optimus has his own "persuasive ways."
There you have it. I believe Age of Extinction will blow us away. I have tried to stay spoiler free by staying away from TV spots and Trailers. I'd love to leave the movie theater mind blown. I wonder though, with the success of this film will people still hate on Bay? Hmm...
Transformers: Age of Extinction stampedes into theaters June 27, 2014. Excited yet?
