To avoid fainting, keep repeating 'It's only a movie...It's only a movie...'

I wrote recently about crimes linked to The Slender Man meme - in short, two 12-year-old girls tragically stabbed a friend 19 times, claiming influence from The Slender Man.

Now, it is very unlikely that a popular internet-sourced horror character alone could prompt a couple of regular kids to attempt murder - and that's a longer debate for another time - but nonetheless, you'd feel bad if you'd helped develop that character.

The people over at Creepypasta sure did. The thriving creative forum, which was instrumental in forming and popularizing The Slender Man, has stepped up in a way that I think is admirable.

In a heartfelt statement, Creepypasta offered their condolences to the victim of the Wisconsin 'Slender Man' stabbing, and asked members of the Creepypasta community to donate to the girl's wellbeing:

All proceeds from the stream will be going to the girl and her family to aid with any fees that may have come with this horrifying event and to SafeHorizon, an organization dedicated to aiding children, adults and families that are victims of crime and abuse.

Mercifully, the victim of the stabbing has been released from hospital and is approaching recovery. Let's hope she - and everyone affected by the tragic incident - can move on with their lives.
