I'd gone to the thrift store with my pocket money and brought back the Straight Outta Compton album. It took 30 seconds for my mom to yank it from the tape deck. Well, mom, I'm in my twenties now and you can't stop me watching the N.W.A. movie!
Known as a 'voice for the voiceless', N.W.A.'s explicit music exposed the true nature of L.A. during the 80's: Thugs, guns, crack, gangs, and police brutality. Together, the original members Ice Cube, Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and MC Ren made up a truly controversial band that changed the face of hip hop music.
And now, courtesy of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube themselves, we have the first photo of the movie's three leads. Here's O'Shea Jackson Jr. (that's Cube's son to you and I), Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E:
Apparently, Michael B. Jordan was Dre's preferred choice to play his younger self, but Jordan wasn't available because of his commitment to the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
N.W.A. are musically talented and socio-politically savvy legends who helped pave the way for more mainstream rappers like Kanye, who now sings about eating croissants in French restaurants. If any artist deserves a biopic, it's those who propelled the genre to fame and had something real to say, like N.W.A.
Don't agree? Well tough sh*t. Ice can do what he wants... "Cos gangsta rap made him do it."
You gonna watch the N.W.A. movie?
