Could Matt Damon be set for a dramatic return to the Bourne franchise?

As rumors go, everyone - myself included - should take them with a pinch of salt. The information surrounding this one does seem to be quite thin and for us to believe it there needs to be a certain degree of trust.

I'm sure that anyone that knows anything about the production of the Bourne franchise knows that Matt Damon has always said that he would not return to the character unless Paul Greengrass was directing. Justin Lin - [Fast & Furious 6](movie:37143) - is cofirmed as director for [Bourne 5](movie:423881) so this makes it yet harder to believe this one.

But one thing that makes me think this might have credibility is it's source, El Mayimbe. The trusted insider who broke Batfleck, has said in a new report that the reason for the delay on the latest Bourne movie is because Matt Damon will return as Jason Bourne.

The evidence to support Mayimbe's claim is the reported move of the release date of Bourne 5 from August 2015 to July 2016. The press release by the studio stated that this was a move to replace Bourne with the rap gangtser movie [Straight Outta Compton](movie:332789).

In response to this Mayimbe had this to say:

...the last Bourne movie (The Bourne Legacy) made $276 million worldwide at the box office. So why is the studio slotting Bourne 5 against Ice Age 5 whose last entry made $877 million?! Does that make any sense? Universal must have a serious ace card up its sleeve. You know what that ace card is?
Matt fucking Damon.

Perhaps he's right. Perhaps there are good reasons to think that Damon is returning. In a recent interview with Jeremy Renner it seemed that he thought Bourne was happening sooner rather than later as he was asked about being in [True Detective](series:755331):

It's kind of unlikely. In fact, I'm kind of strapped time-wise doing Avengers 2, and Mission: Impossible 5 is rearing its head, and then they want to do another Bourne movie. It's unlikely I can find the time right now. And that's all right.

So what we can take from this is that if Damon does return, Renner will also be returning. Perhaps Renner might make Bourne into a junkie too 'the first one's free, come on...'. I joke.

On the topic of this unfaltering promise between Greengrass and Damon not doing Bourne without each other, El Mayimbe concluded with this.

I'm sure they (Damon and Lin) found a story they both liked. My source believes that Damon recent misfires at the box office has a lot to do with it as well.

I think a world where Renner's story is the main story but that also involves Bourne's amnesiac past could be quite interesting. I personally found the story of Legacy a very interesting one. It did what espionage stories are supposed to do and make us ask the question 'is what we are being told actually what is going on in the world?' for a number of topics. Renner's story was more complicated where Damon's Bourne was a better thriller. If both of these come together then there's a serious film to be had.

What do you think?
