Karen Gillan, the Scottish actress who had a break out role in Doctor Who, wants to take a crack at Spider-Girl.
Having already played a comic book villain in James Gunn's [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073), SFX asked her the question that was on everyones lips... If you could choose, which superhero would you be?
If you could play a superhero, which one would you choose?
Yeah, who is there…? I want to play a version of Spider-Man that’s a lady.
Spider-Woman – does she exist?
There’s a Spider-Woman and a Spider-Girl.
I want to play Spider-Girl!
Albeit a whimsical answer, lets take this seriously for a moment and consider it a viable option. Spider-Girl is May “Mayday” Parker, yet I personally believe that the story of Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) could fit into the current cinematic world of Marvel.
Jessica Drew was primarily a student of HYDRA, trained to be a perfect assassin with her first and only mission for the evil outfit an assassination attempt on Nick Fury. After this she had another bust up with HYDRA in London, before moving to Los Angeles and then San Francisco. It is here that she meets the enigmatic Dr. Strange, who saves her from a vengeance enthused attack by Morgan Le Fey. With Marvel allegedly looking into a solo Strange film, this could be the perfect step to introducing her into the world.
Introduction to New Avengers
Following this, Drew sought a permanent solution to her fluctuating powers and struck a deal with HYDRA to spy on S.H.I.E.L.D, but this deal was capitalised on by Nick Fury who used her as a way of spreading false intelligence. Yet what neither her or Fury knew was that an enormous alien Skrull cell was in charge of the process to revive and stabilize her powers. How many times have we seen the theme of Skrulls or Kree being thrown around in connotation to Marvel projects ?
After reviving her powers, Queen Veranke used her DNA to enable her to perfectly impersonate Jessica for at least a year before she and her vast Skrull army fell in the final stages of their preplanned invasion of Earth. This plan was foiled, as Ironman rescued Jessica, along with numerous other individuals, from being held captive in a Skrull spaceship which was orbiting the Earth with the rest of the Skrull fleet. Wolverine soon recruited her into the latest incarnation of New Avengers yet her return to earth was met with distaste by a lot of the New Avengers. She was determined to prove her worth but failed in a plan to deceive Norman Osborn and his "Dark" Avengers.
Agent of S.W.O.R.D
S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is a subdivision of the better known S.H.I.E.L.D. but appears to be largely autonomous of its parent organization. With the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D in Cap 2, perhaps we could see the rise of S.W.O.R.D in the upcoming phases ?
Jessica Drew becomes an agent of the organisation after an offer from Abigail Brand, with her first mission taking her to Madripoor where she took on a Skrull posing as Spider-Man. After the mission was over, Brand offered her new opportunities for jobs to do with S.W.O.R.D. Almost like the Black Widow for S.H.I.E.L.D!
Finally Jessica Drew becomes a fully fledged member of the Avengers team. Within her first day she comes into battle with none other than Kang the Conqueror. After the situation with Kang was resolved, the Avengers fought against the Hood, who was attempting to retrieve the Infinity Gems. She even has a romance blossom with Hawkeye, after realising her feelings for her fellow Avenger during the Serpent's invasion of Midgard.
With Hollywood in desperate need of a strong, female lead super heroine film, could this be Marvels secret weapon ? We are used to Marvel throwing us curveballs, and they are pioneering the way for superhero films to be taken seriously both at the box office and by the critics. Will we see the fruition of this project ? Or is this just another superhero article... With the above information, comment below some of YOUR theories about how they could introduce this character!
