HUGE news here!
Looper and Brick director Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII: Insert Title Here, following-up J.J. Abrams' Episode VII: The Search for More Money. Johnson will also go on to write the treatment for Episode IX, though he will not direct. If Disney is going to follow the original trilogy model, George Lucas will be back for Episode IX, and we'll lose all the goodwill the franchise will have theoretically built up by then.
Disney is absolutely killing it so hard with the Star Wars franchise. I say that, of course, without a single frame of any potential movie or a single line of any potential script having graced my looking-balls. This is purely on the basis of the talent involved in these movies, including the spin-off movies coming from Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards. Ok, maybe Edwards isn't my favorite filmmaker in the world, but between Abrams, Trank, and now Rian Johnson, Disney's clearly putting some serious game forward here. Next thing we'll find out is that Edgar Wright left Ant-Man to make a buddy-cop C3PO/R2D2 movie with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost that's written by William Goldman andShakespeare.
Also: Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a Sith warlord. Don't think about it. Just do it.
