In my opinion the original batman movies are not as good as Christopher Nolan's. They were still good but i have a couple of reasons to why they do not match up to the dark knight trilogy. here i will give my factors to my opinion and explain how they dragged down the first ones.
1. the age of them
I think that blockbuster movies should not be made so early on. my reason for this is because the older they are the less of a spectacle they become. in batman (1989) it was so slow paced and now that i have seen the recent trilogy it just doesn't seem as good as i thought they were before. the scene where the bat-mobile is seen flying in the air to get the balloons with smilax gas is so old fashioned it just brings down the movie and in the others, although they get better it still isn't up to scratch. however they still paved the way for batman as the acting and screenplay was great(most of the time, I'm looking at you batman and robin!) so this isn't a major reason.
2. the suits
i think we can all agree that some of the suits were plain stupid( again, batman and robin!, double problem!). they were made of rubber which meant stiff movement especially in the neck. and i bet everyone who reads this knows mainly why this subject is in this list!: the-bat-nipple-suit! not to mention the suit at the end with silver stripes down the side of the mask.
you know that bit where batman purposely misses the crook with the grappler in batman returns? well it gets attached to the wall and with just a slight back motion of his hand, batman pulls a piece of brick from the wall(yes a brick, with ease!). this is an perfect example of the kind of plot holes are in the batman's following years. Another bit is where Mr freeze freezes the whole town!, what is that going to do? make everyone die of hypothermia? has he heard of going inside? anyway that is just a stupid idea as in the mourning the ice could just melt by the sun.(but then again, tell me a film which doesn't have some sort of plot hole. just check cinemasins!)
batman and robin just ruined Bane! i mean look at those extremely green and vainy arms, the unnecessary chest piece and spikes around his waist and that mask! they just went over the top for this character and our eyes and and expectations paid the price!
5. Mr freeze
there is only one word for you to know which ruined comic villain i mean : terrible puns!. yes it is Mr freeze and Arnold Schwarzenegger unexpectedly destroyed this character!( he done terminator right, why not this?). The suit also looked very robotic and futuristic and was nothing like the comic incarnation. if you ask me, they should of made it look more like the batman:arkham city Mr freeze suit which,to me, was a cross between Halo( the kind of astronaut look)and Tron legacy(the flashy blue lighting)
6. the penguin
They literally turned the Mafia boss-like penguin of the comics into a monster! snivelling, hunched, pointy nose, black spots around the eyes and black blood coming out of his mouth at the end, all made the Danny devito version of the classic villain a mess. if it isn't broken, don't fix it, Tim!
7. character cramming
this is another hit at B.A.R. this movie was full to the end of batman characters. it was like they thought " well, this is going to be one of the last batman movies, so lets fit as many batman characters we can, to make this one amazing!". there was: batman, robin,Alfred, batgirl,Jim gordan, poison ivy,Bane, Mr freeze(these were the main characters) that's 8 main characters! This meant that the screen time was not shared equally between them, so some characters were not emphasised on and it was too much to keep up with
8. joker/Wayne family storyline
in batman(1989) it is finally revealed that jack Napier(before he became the joker) killed Bruce's parents, well, this didn't happen in the comics, so it isn't faithful to it's source material, well done for originality, but in the first proper batman film, i would prefer the joker story to be kept the same.but that's just me.
well, we can summarise that batman and robin was an complete disaster, but i cannot judge the whole franchise by just one of the films. however, poor action quality, bad visuals, rubbish costume design, plot holes, Too many characters and stupid villain portrayals, all make this film just in the shadow of the dark knight trilogy!
