Recently I reported a rumor that Matt Damon would be returning to the Bourne franchise alongside Jeremy Renner in [Bourne 5](movie:423881). He would be reprising his role as the iconic Jason Bourne if the film went ahead.

Now it seems as though Bourne producer Frank Marshall has denied there is any truth to the rumor.

Here's what Marshall had to say:

It's simply not true... Justin Lin is working with Andrew Baldwin on an Aaron Cross script/story that they pitched us a few months ago. I talk to Justin all the time and the script is not ready. It's a summer movie, and if we don't start preproduction now, we can't make next summer. Therefore, it's a wise decision to move to 2016.

However, remember the recent publicity shenanigans surrounding Jason Momoa as Aquaman? He was announced, it was then denied and finally he was confirmed as [Aquaman](movie:264237) in the upcoming [Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870).

It could be a simple instance of this where just before they start any financial publicity for the movie, the studio needs to draw some initial attention to their project with the cheapest publicity out there; rumor.

Personally I still believe that Damon could return. In an interview recently with CNBC Damon did express an opinion that suggests he's still interested.

I've always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We've just never been able to come up with a story. So if any of your viewers have a story, please call Universal and submit it. It felt like such a good way to end it the last time... But having said that, I love that character and I'd love to see what happened to him.

Who knows? Could be publicity, could be that they don't actually know or Damon might just not be Bourne again.

What do you think with all the facts presented here, is it a studio white wash or is he just not Bourne?
