Just last week, Ian Somerhalder confronted an awful truth on Twitter. The actor was totally shaken by the harsh reality that elephant poaching had claimed the life of Africa's biggest elephant, and now he is doing something about it.

As well as crying out to his 5 million Twitter followers for help, Ian Somerhalder is taking the issue all the way to congress to try and protect the endangered wildlife of the world.

Just 4 days ago Ian revealed his plans by photographing himself nervously chewing on the corner of his speech;

Along with the caption;

Wow. My Testimony: Before the U.S House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs Regarding the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Plan to Implement a Ban on the Commercial Trade in Elephant Ivory and the Consequences of that Policy. I will do my absolute best-you'll be there with me in that room on Capitol Hill. You give me so much strength, you inspire me to do more, not sleep and forge the future with you for us all. Wish me LUCK! PLEASE!

And now, it looks like Somerhalder is achieving his goals!

[The Vampire Diaries](series:200853) actor was pictured landing in Washington, D.C. on Monday June 23 looking sunny and optimistic about the mammoth task in hand and he still found time to give some love to his fans. Such a true gent;

Ian hasn't released any statements about how it went just yet, but here's hoping it was a big success. Both for Somerhalder, and the elephants of Africa.
