Edge of Tomorrow really was a breath of fresh-air in this year's reboot and sequel filled summer-blockbuster period.

Sure, it was big and explodey and it starred an A-list actor in the form of Tom Cruise, but it was also original, surprisingly funny and gave us one of the best female characters I've seen on the big screen in some time - Emily Blunt as Rita "Full Metal Bitch" Vrataski.

Also, the film had a brilliant art design, showing a nice mix of contemporary features with a slight futuristic twist. This certainly applies to both the aliens and the exo-suits that appear in the movie. The aliens move erratically and continue to appear genuinely dangerous, while the exo-suits appear cumbersome but also believable and powerful. Today we've got some concept art which shows of alternative designs for the aliens, as well as the exo-suit. Check them out below:

As I suggested above, if you haven't seen [Edge of Tomorrow](movie:267902) already, I sincerely advocate that you do. It's certainly the most fun I've had in a movie theater this year. And, if you're fan of video-gaming like me, you'll recognize a lot of familiar themes, tropes and nods to the medium.

There's also another important side to all this. In an age of the same old franchises being shoved out year after year we should take the rare opportunity to endorse interesting, well-crafted and more thought-provoking blockbusters - which Edge of Tomorrow certainly is. The movie hasn't done terribly at the box office, but if studios can be persuaded movies like this are a profitable venture, hopefully we'll be seeing more of them in the future.
