Spider-Man is one of the few Marvel superheroes that tends to be on multiple superhero teams. With the bad news that [The Amazing Spider-Man 3](movie:671279) is being delayed and the talk of Sony's financial troubles, it could make perfect business sense to let other studios borrow Spider-Man for a fee, instead of just having the character sitting around doing nothing. So then maybe the question shouldn't be "should they" but more along the lines of "which one?"
The Spiderverse is filled with many incarnations of Spider-Man across multiple parallel universes so, there are dozens to choose from. And in the end, it would only help to build the Spider-Man universe that Sony wants. I mean you have the Scarlet Spider who is a clone of Peter Parker, you have Miles Morales who is the interracial Ultimate Spider-Man, May Parker who is the daughter of Peter Parker known as Spider-Girl, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man 2099, etc... it's a huge list.
Introducing these characters in other movie franchises like X-Men, Fantastic Four or the Avengers could help cut back on a movies worth of origin story and help establish characters that Sony could later build upon in their own movies. In the 90's Spider-Man cartoon, Spider-Men from across multiple universes teamed up to stop a life ending event, Sony could very well go down this path much like an Avengers or Justice League style team up only with Spider-Man instead.
What do you guys think, if Sony isn't willing to give up the rights to Spider-Man, should they just start renting him out to help build the Spider-Man brand?
