No I wasn't stuttering. Remakes, call them what you will reboots, reinventions, re-tellings, rehashing or regurgitation - Hollywood is full of them these days. I myself, have mixed feelings about them. Take for instance a movie made in black and white in the 1940s, 50s, or 60s, especially horror or sci-fi. It can be greatly improved with today's technical advances in film production. For instance The Fly (spoiler alert if you hadn't seen these dramatic endings in the past 25-55 years).
Of course we have bad examples of that too. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 & 2008) But let's not go there. It might make Keanu sad, at least that's what it did to me.
(Classic meme alert!)
Some things you just can't re-imagine redoing or can you? For example the gigantic messes that were Roland Emmerich's Godzilla or Ang Lee's Hulk movies. Thank the movie gods they called "Do Overs" on those!
One classic franchise that I grew up watching on late night TV and VHS was the Planet of the Apes. Although the franchise had it's high and low points, but they were like my family, literally the apes reminded me of my family especially when I was being punished.
C'mon who wouldn't want to grow up to be Charlton Heston?
That's why back at the turn of the century I was a little nervous when I heard they were remaking the Planet of the Apes Then I thought, oh it's Tim Burton, it might be good. Boy was I wrong! I hated that movie. That and his re-imagining of Dark Shadows were RE-eally bad, in my opinion.
Then came Rise of the Planet of the Apes and my love of simian cinema was Re-born! I'm excited and the early reviews are pretty good for the upcoming sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes too!
This is a perfect example of how motion capture technology (and Andy Serkis!) has improved on a classic!
Of course not all re-tellings are good. Here is a list of films that have been recently redone. You tell me what's better the original or the remake. Please let me know if I missed any in the comments or REgrets about any past or upcoming remixes like Annie, or if you'd like to see a new version of RE-Animator. Whatever revives you, I'm done.
