Andy Serkis announced recently that he will be playing 'a character' in Star Wars: Episode VII. Details of who he'll play are still unclear, but what we do know is he will be taking this role alongside his motion capture duties on the movie.

He recently announced his characters involvement in the movie as well as his company's, The Imaginarium,

Here's what he had to say below:

JJ Abrams and I met, and we just had this incredible kind of vibe between us. He said, ‘You’d fit really well in this universe,’ and I said, ‘I think I probably could.’ We’re working very closely, as I say, in two ways: the Imaginarium is providing all of the performance characters, and I myself am playing a character in it.

Serkis could be announcing a major character because let's face it, you don't cast the leading man in mo-cap and have him playing a miscellaneous storm trooper banging his head on a door frame. Serkis is going to be a major character. Trying not to get too carried away with that, it does make me think; what if he could play Jabba or Yoda in a flashback or a hologram image? Or while going this far let's go a bit further and say that he could be a mo-cap version of Han Solo while Ford's leg mends - that's ridiculous and I'm aware of that.

What characters would you like to see return with a Serkis treatment?

Star Wars characters by Andy Serkis

He certainly seems excited to be a part of the movie in any case:

I’m thrilled, deeply excited. Sitting at that read-through the other day was just extraordinary. It was an amazing event; being with the original cast was just incredible. I just think the script is so wonderful, and both the old and the newbies in the cast are just so thrilled and excited to get together.

It's fair to say that if Serkis was at a read through with all the actors then it won't be a bit part. It is also worth considering that he could be playing a live-action character. As well as with the mo-cap career, Serkis has enjoyed some of the best live action performances of the last ten years, usually in smaller Indies.

To name a few:

Glen - Wild Bill

Ian Dury - Sex Drugs and Rock & Roll

Lumpy - King Kong

Though, given his track record on bigger movies as motion capture characters, I have my money on him doing the same with Star Wars. Just as a recap and a bit of nostalgia...

Check out below some of Serkis' best mo-cap work:

Kong - King Kong

Captain Haddock - The Adventures of Tin Tin

Caesar - Rise of the Planet of the Apes and this year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Gollum - The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogy

I think he is one of the only actors who has managed to bring such great emotion and heart to the motion capture performances. For me it's always the eyes. In The Polar Express and a few other of Zemekis' mo-cap attempts, the eyes were empty. I think it takes an actor like Serkis to determine what makes a good performance along with researching and developing the technology needed to achieve the level of quality that has been a constant in his career.

His addition to the Star Wars series isn't suprising. If we could only just figure out who he will be playing.
