Back at the Cannes Film Festival, The Expendables headliner, Sylvester Stallone revealed that the latest installment of the franchise could be toning down the violence, blood-shed and language in order to grab a much coveted PG-13 rating.
It seems that since then, the eighties action star hasn't changed his mind, since the ERC Box Office has just confirmed that [The Expendables 3](movie:388705) will indeed be a PG-13 for "violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language."
As we mentioned earlier, a PG-13 movie doesn't necessarily mean there will not be major gun battles or fight scenes. Indeed, a recent study revealed PG-13 movies actually contain more gun violence that R-rated movies, although apparently much less visible blood. Stallone did previously state that The Expendables 3 would be very close to an R, explaining:
We want to reach as many people as possible. It's very close to an R, believe me, it's right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought we'd join that club for a while.
Of course, the main impetus for this decision is to open the action franchise up to more lucrative demographics in order to generate great revenue. However, I'm sure older fans of the series, and the action stars which make up its cast, will not all be best pleased with this news.
Do you think this will ruin The Expendables 3?
