It's been a long time coming, but it looks as though we finally - FINALLY - have our first proper look at Henry Cavill as Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
It comes courtesy of USA Today, who've just posted an image by Clay Enos, the movie's set photographer. Since Enos is the guy set to be behind pretty much every image we'll see from the film, this one looks like it's for real.
Which is great news, since it's an awesome image - and might just show us what direction the filmmakers are planning on taking the hero in the movie:
Yup, that's pretty darned cool.
It's also, though, a pretty big change in direction for Superman since Man of Steel.
The costume itself has shifted slightly - mostly to do with the lines around Supes' stomach, though the belt looks a lot more squared off, too.
Also evidently changed is Cavill's hair - which we already suspected from the few recent glimpses we've had of him. It's shorter, and far slicker than before, as the recent image below suggests:
But what, though, does all of this mean for Superman?
The new suit we can perhaps write off as just the inevitable change from one film to another - you only have to look at the changing designs of Thor's costume to see how much this happens - but what about the hair, and the dark, gritty nature of the image?
It might just mean we're about to see a darker, less clear-cut hero.
There's more than a little of the Injustice: Gods Among Us Superman about the image - between the rain, the slicked back hair, the arrogant posture, and the gloomy backdrop, this certainly doesn't look like the brightly-lit, All-American hero of Man of Steel. It looks a whole lot more like this guy:
Now, while Superman is - you have to assume - not going to be playing the truly dark, dictatorial role he did in Injustice, this new image might just be hinting at a darker turn for the character in Batman v Superman. He certainly looks like a natural foe of Batman - all hubris and authoritarianism.
Is it possible that this image - which certainly seems to be the first proper release from the studio - could be a glimpse of things to come? Are we going to see a darker Superman, altered somehow by the darkness of THAT decision at the end of Man of Steel, and by the consequences of his actions?
It would make a certain amount of sense - if it isn't possible for us to root for either hero, or both, the whole Batman v Superman angle is going to be a tough sell, and the traditional do-gooder Superman is far too nice to be in any way morally compromised. It would also tie in nicely with the dark tone Warner Brothers seem set to pursue with Aquaman.
No matter what, though, the conflict we're about to see between the two heroes just got a whole lot more interesting...
[Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice](movie:711870) is set for release May 6, 2016.
What do you guys think? How dark should Superman get?
