I've talked previously about my dislike for too much promo when it comes to upcoming movies, but Marvel/Disney has just blown all my arguments out of the water with their latest move, in the form of a galactic travel agency: Galaxy Getaways.
Galaxy Getaways is a slice of marketing genius; a site that presents the various planets that we will see in the movie as tourist destinations, complete with travel guides, street views, photos and an FAQ section for travelers. The site also includes a welcome video from the agency, passport options, a quiz on your ideal destination and even a game called "I am Groot".
The first click presents you with a video that captures the humor of the project, and had me laughing within the first few seconds. This laughter continued through the next twenty minutes as I explored the site, so I highly recommend checking it out in the privacy of your own home, unless you really want to annoy the people around you with unstoppable giggling. (Of course, if you enjoy being asked "what's so funny?" by increasingly annoyed people, please, watch it in a crowded coffee shop!)
This promo video sets you up perfectly for the attitude in the rest of the site, with sharp wit on every page. It's almost impossible for me to narrow it down to my favorite lines (and I don't want to give it all away) but with quotes from "satisfied customers" such as these, you are guaranteed to leave with a smile on your face.
It's like visiting a National Park. Only no awesome views. Also, it's really really dangerous.
Or how about this, from the FAQ section?
I am a pretty average human being, will that be a problem on my destination planet?
That sounds like more of a problem for you on Earth.
Of course, it's more than just a fun and interactive way for Marvel to promote their next hit. It is packed full of never-before-seen stills from the movies, revealing info about the sets, characters and (obviously) which planets we will see the Guardians visiting during their adventures. This "testimonial" gives away the location of a fight scene.
Aside from a fight between a raccoon, a tree and the Nova Corps, the Xandar mall was amazing!
We also get to see some great shots of other characters, under the guise of "insider tips" and "pick of the week" including a "local" at the Boot of Jeremiah, The Collector, and an unnamed agent.
The site even features a hashtag #YoureWelcome, and although this is such a common tag that the tweets aren't all about the site, there are a lot of excited people using it; proving once again how powerful viral marketing and social media can be when done right. High five, Disney!
Even if it reveals even more about a movie that we already know almost too much about, it's so much fun that I just don't care! Stop whatever you are doing, and go check it out. You will not regret it! #YoureWelcome
