One of my favourite adventure stories along with a happy musical vibe. Dorothy (Judy Garland), 'Hunk' Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), 'Zeke' The Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) and 'Hickory' The Tin Man (Jack Haley), are on a journey to the Emerald City.
We all know the wonderful story of Oz. Dorothy's house has been aloft by a twister tornado, while running for safety she hits her head and becomes unconscious. She wakes up with her dog Toto to find herself landed in the wonderful world of Oz. Dorothy is welcomed by Glinda the good witch of the North and the Munchkins. Dorothy's house killed the Wicked witch of the East but then her sister the Wicked witch of the West arrives. She wants to claim the magic ruby slippers now that her sister has passed but Glinda gave them to Dorothy for her to make her way to the Emerald City to get help from the powerful Oz to make her way home. But things don't seem to go well as the Wicked witch of the West is not giving up. Dorothy was instructed to follow the Yellow Brick road to the city where on her way she meets Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and The Tin Man who help her get there safely.
A film i adore so much. The beginning of the film was in a sepia/black and white. As soon as Dorothy arrives in Oz and opens the door to find out where she is the film turns into colour. This is one of the famous scenes in film history to master this effect, as when she does open the door before she steps out to Munchkin Land in Oz she's still in the sepia colour whilst outside it's colourful within the film. The set design of the world around them just feels so real and for it's time (1939) it was so well made.
Watch the beginning scene below before she enters Oz.
I highly recommend this film one of my favourite classic films and nothing beats the original. NOTHING!
