Fresh off of rebuilding Transformers, ComicBook.com is reporting that Mark Wahlberg is rumored to be the guy Universal wants to play Col. Steve Austin in a movie version of the popular 1970's TV show.
The show based on the Martin Caidin novel Cyborg started out as a made for TV movie in 1973 and became a series that ran from 1974-1978 which led to a spin off, The Bionic Woman in 1976, merchandise, comic books and some reunion movies. Look up pop culture icons of the 70's and you'll find The Bionic Man. There was an attempt to remake the series The Bionic Woman in 2007
He even fought Bigfoot! (Andre the Giant)
Harvey Weinstien has owned the rights to the show in the mid 90's. Kevin Smith had even wrote a script, which was eventually used for a comic book published in 2011 by Dynamite Comics.
For many years, attempts have been made to bring the story of Steve Austin to the movie screen. At one time there were reports that comedian Chris Rock was being considered for the role. In 2003, an announcement was made that it would be a full-out comedic remake starring Jim Carrey. In July 2006 Richard Anderson (who played Oscar Goldman in the series) stated that he was involved with producing a movie of the series.
Of course Wahlberg reportedly makes between 10 and 17 million per movie so if they adjust for inflation they may have to call it The Six Billion Dollar Man.
