For over 70 years kids (and some adults) have been reading comic books with such characters as Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man, The Avengers... and the list goes on and on.
We all have our opinions of who is the greatest Superhero or who can beat whom in a fight but what about your favorite Comic Book Artists? Many times it's the artwork that makes (or breaks) a great comic book story.
Here is a list of my Top 5 Greatest comic book artists of all time...
5. Jim Starlin
He's the guy who created Thanos. His career goes all the way back to the early 70's where he drew for Marvel's Cosmic line of characters including Adam Warlock & Captain Marvel. He is also the co-creator of Drax, Gamora and Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. So basically, I'm saying Guardians of the Galaxy, the top grossing Superhero film of 2014 would not have happened without him. His influence is definitely felt today as much as the 70's.
4. John Byrne
Another artist who started for Marvel in the mid 70's, He's drawn for just about every comic book around: The Uncanny X-Men, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight and a brief run at Captain America. John later moved to DC and wrote & drew for Batman (The untold legend of Batman) and later Superman- revamping that franchise in the mid 80's and taking it back to its' basics.
3. Neal Adams
When you think of Batman, the images that probably come to your mind are the images drawn by Neal Adams. He's one of the most influential comic book artists in my opinion. He's drawn just about every DC Hero there is and also did some work for Marvel (drawing for the X-Men in the early 70's) at a time when such cross-company work was rare. More importantly, is his work as a creators-rights advocate who helped secure a pension and recognition for Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
2. Frank Miller
He is the Father of the Modern Graphic Novel, having written and drawn some of the most popular works of the past 35 years. Frank started as the artist for Daredevil in the late 70's bringing that franchise to its' peak before leaving to create the Dark Knight Returns (which is the basis of the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice- coming out in 2016.) His other Graphic Novels: Sin City and 300 have seen their way to the big screen in recent years. Frank is also the creator of the character Elektra.
1. Jack Kirby
The man has created or co-created just about every major character in Marvel Comics. From Captain America in 1941 to The Fantastic Four, The original team of The Avengers: Thor, Ant-Man the Wasp, Iron-Man & The Hulk in the 60's. Jack Kirby is a God among men in the industry. Hey, when you have a comic book hall of fame named after you you must be #1 right?
