Guillermo Del Toro has been busy lately. Executive producer on the upcoming TV series based on his and Chuck Hogan's The Strain. Then there's his latest announcement that he'll be working on the Sequel to Pacific Rim along with an animated series and comic book.
But remember last year in March when Pacific Rim was released and Del Toro confirmed that the film bible for his version of JL Dark- "Dark Universe" was completed. It was to include John Constantine, Swamp Thing, the Spectre, Deadman, Zatanna and Zatara.
He was still saying he was working on it last July. Then they announced that Constantine was going to be a television show. That didn't stop him though, Del Toro told IGN in October-
“We talked about it at DC and Warners, and I feel confident that the two properties can exist at the same time,”.
He also said this-
"I think the thing about the ‘Dark Universe,’ you have this possibility of basically creating a supernatural group, and you can play by different rules, but I would love to see the DC Universe become as cohesive as the Marvel film universe. So if there’s any correlation, I will honor it."
However when The production schedule for upcoming DC movies was leaked by Nikki Finke There was no mention of "Dark Universe".
Of course this isn't the first time Del Toro has talked about planned projects only to drop out. From the cancelled Frankenstein movie with Universal, and the adaptation of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, to the highly-anticipated At The Mountains of Madness. Del toro has talked about what could've been some amazing projects.
Does this mean that he's given up on Dark Universe though? I don't know he still keeps talking about At the Mountains of Madness the tough part is always getting the money for these things maybe if Pacific Rim 2 is a much bigger hit.
But that's not coming out until 2017! The idea does occur to me though, that maybe they are saving these characters for television after all Del Toro said this about Dark Universe at WonderCon-
"[John Constantine] is basically trying to recruit these guys," del Toro said. "On Etrigan, I'm using Jason Blood in the time of Merlin. We find out at the top that they each have a mystery to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman needs to figure out who shot him. It's all woven in. Growing up, my two favorite characters were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I'm in heaven."
Well maybe not until after you get done with Pacific Rim 2 Guillermo, but I think putting these characters and others from JL Dark on TV's Constantine could definitely give them more time to develop as opposed to just cramming them all into one feature film. I'm looking forward to this show, but I would also have loved to have seen Del Toro's "Dark Universe."
