The 2014 box office might have been dominated by the usual big hitters, but there still seems to be a space for none franchise, non-superhero movies to make some money. Indeed, Disney's Maleficient has done good enough to join the coveted 'superhero' club at the top of the box office.

OK, so Maleficent isn't exactly an 'original', indie movie, however it is unique in the top of the box office as it is not a superhero movie. [Maleficent](movie:39352) has currently made $632 million worldwide, which means it joins the The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Past as the only other movie to break the $600 million mark.

However, it won't be the only non-superhero movie to have done this for long. [Transformers: Age of Extinction](movie:206531) is hot on its tail, currently standing at $597 million. With that movie still to open in Europe and Latin America, we could potentially see the fourth Transformers movie inching closer to $1 billion. However, even when that joins the $600 million group, Maleficent can still claim to be the only non-sequel movie be at the top of the box office.

Do you think Maleficent deserved to make so much money?
