Every Iron Man fan knows that Robert Downey Jr. is an all round AWESOME dude, but just what about him inspires so much passion from the fandom?

Whether he's cracking killer jokes in interviews or reaching out with the hand of friendship, there's something about RDJ's enthusiasm and zest for life that makes his personality shine through.

So, let's salute the real-life Tony Stark with 13 reasons why he is the lord of the awesome!

He pulled himself up from rock bottom

Most celebrities who spiral into serious drug addiction never regain the traction of their career, but Robert Downey Jr. isn't like most celebrities.

After an addiction that started in the '80s took over Downey Jr's life, he faced a series of arrests and stints in jail. As a result, RDJ was written off as a lost cause who was hell bent on destroying himself.

Despite the public not believing in him, Downey Jr. fought with determination to conquer his drug addiction and eventually got his life and career back on track.

Unlike lesser men, Robert Downey Jr. doesn't shy away from acknowledging his difficult past and conquers questions about his dark days head on in interviews.

That takes nerve.

He IS Iron Man!

Robert Downey Jr. is the ultimate embodiment of Tony Stark and it's impossible to imagine anyone else filling Iron Man's metallic suit.

In the words of Joss Whedon:

He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him

And he loves every second of it as much as his fans...

After Growing up on a staple diet of the Iron Man comics, Robert Downey Jr. retains a youthful enthusiasm for all things superhero.

When questioned about how he urged Chris Evans to take on the role of Captain America, Downey Jr. revealed the depths of his passion by explaining that:

I'm a fan of his (Captain America). I'm not kidding. I'm having 50 kids over and I'm screening 'Captain America 2' on my birthday, which happens to be the day it opens.

...I mean, check out this number plate!

He might be busy saving the world, but RDJ always has time to be a great friend...

Unlike those fake, superficial Hollywood types, Robert Downey Jr. builds real friendships to those close to him.

Mark Ruffalo opened up about their incredible friendship on a Reddit AMA and his words speak volumes about Downey Jr's supportive character. Ruffalo said:

We have a really good friendship. We've known each other since before Zodiac. And he's kind of like an older brother that I wish I had. He sort of looks out for me, and I remember when the role came up in the movie, I reached out to him, I was nervous about it, I said "I don't know if I can do this" and he said "It's alright buddy, I gotcha"

...and he uses his time in the gutter as motivation to help others who have made mistakes...

Robert Downey Jr. doesn't take the kindness of people who have reached out to him lightly. Mel Gibson might have said some terrible things, but Downey Jr. understands that we all make mistakes and deserve a second chance.

That takes serious strength.

...Including his own son

When Indio Downey was arrested for cocaine possession, his father stood firmly by his side.

RDJ even admitted that his own addiction issues could be the source of the problem, and did not shy away from taking responsibility to avoid tarnishing his career.

The statement Downey Jr. released read:

Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he’s capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale

You've got to admire the honesty.

But, he never takes himself too seriously

Have you ever seen an interview with RDJ when he doesn't crack a joke?

Even when tackling serious issues, Downey Jr. uses his signature sense of humor to help break down barriers with his upbeat personality.

He's an artist...

Quick, fire the Iron Man storyboarders immediately, RDJ clearly has the artistic skills to run that joint... And a pretty good canvas to boot!

...AND a singer

Who knew!

But, he isn't above admitting he knows the original 151 Pokémon!

I'd say you were more of an Arcanine myself, but who am to judge?

RDJ appreciates the importance of kindness and he's AMAZING when it goes right...

Robert Downey Jr. is faultlessly sweet and kind to his young fans.

My heart melted when he made this little guys dreams come true by carrying him into the Stark Audi prototype and letting him take the driving seat.

What a compassionate guy.

...But doesn't get offended if his attempts at bringing a smile don't always work out!

You can't win them over every time, Robert! At least you gave it your best shot...
