Note, mild potential SPOILERS below...
It's been a long time coming, but we finally have our first look at Netflix's upcoming Daredevil series - and it's a good 'un.
The series is currently filming in New York City, and thanks to Latino-Review, we now have our first, fleeting glimpses of how the show is going to look - and how Matt Murdock is going to get his powers in the show, as well as a brief video clip of the set:
Happening Harlem also posted this to Twitter:
Which just so happens to reveal the exact location of the accident within the on screen Marvel universe, which is nice.
The question is, though - what do these images tell us? On the face of it, not a whole lot - but what they confirm is that the series looks set to stay at least fairly faithful to the original comic-book Daredevil's origin.
Back in the comics, a 12 year old Matt Murdock - after a lifetime of being forced to avoid conflict by his boxer father - finally gets the chance to be a hero, when he sees a blind man about to be hit by a truck. It plays out...badly for him:
Murdock jumps into the path of the truck, saving the man - but is himself struck by - in classic 60's comic-book fashion - a radioactive cylinder, and blinded.
Now, take a look at those set pics again, with the original comics for comparison:
Aside from the fact that we might actually get to see the injured Murdock this time around, there's a definite similarity there. There clearly is a truck - although this time around it's apparently a "toxic waste truck" rather than one belonging to ''Ajax Atomic Labs' - and it clearly does hit young Murdock.
He even shouts out "I Can't See" in that video up above.
Which - since the whole 'being an instinctive hero' thing is a huge part of DD's character - is actually pretty reassuring. There's no guarantee that the rest of the series will stay as true to the comics, but at least they're getting the origin right.
The only problem now is that it's going to be at least six months, and probably way longer, before we actually get to see the show.
So, in the meantime, here's a video that shows just how bad a truck full of toxic waste can be - and how lucky Matt Murdock is.
(Disclaimer: it's bloody, brutal, adult...and awesome.)
[Daredevil](series:1168702) is set to hit our screens sometime in 2015.
