According to Deadline, The Wolverine supporting star Hiroyuki Sanada has been cast to join Ian McKellen in A Slight Trick of the Mind, the upcoming drama about an aging Sherlock Holmes that Bill Condon is directing this summer in London. Sanada will play Umezaki, a Prickly Ash plant enthusiast who Holmes (McKellen) visits in Japan. He joins McKellen and Laura Linney as Holmes’ housekeeper, who, with her young son, is informed of the tale of the unsolved mystery that ended Holmes’ career.

The script was adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher (The Duchess) from Mitch Cullin’s novel. Anne Carey is producing for her Archer Gray Productions. Sanada starred recently on the big screen opposite Colin Firth in The Railway Man and will be seen this month in the new Steven Spielberg-exec produced sci fi series Extant, which debuts tonight on CBS. A Slight Trick of the Mind opens in 2015.

It will be interesting to see Sanada perform as a non-villain in this upcoming film, mainly because his performance is past films seemed to have typecast him into the villain role.
