Guillermo Del Toro's film version of the Dark Horse comic, Hellboy, was always intended to be a trilogy. But according to Del Toro himself, it looks like our favorite cat-loving son of the devil won't be getting his ending any time soon.
During a Reddit AMA, Del Toro shared the details of the planned third film in the Hellboy trilogy, [Hellboy 3](movie:466730), but also made it clear that it will be a while before we see the story come to life.
“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”
Del Toro currently has a very full plate, with The Strain premiering tonight (July 19), and other planned projects including Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim 2, and a possible adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness.
