The build-up to the 2014 New Zealand International Film Festival has been phenomenal, and Monday saw the launch of the programme for Christchurch.
Every year cinephiles eagerly await the announcements regarding the films that will be screened at NZIFF, and this year was no different. A dazzling array of films from Aotearoa/New Zealand and abroad awaited fans between the brochure's glossy pages. At the Christchurch launch media and assembled guests were treated to a showing of Lukas Moodysson's delightful We Are the Best! which is sure to be a hit. This funny, upbeat film about three punkette teens at the end of the punk era is offbeat and driven by the fantastic performances of the three young lead actresses.
So many delights abound this year, including Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi epic Snowpiercer, Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin and Richard Linklater's Boyhood. The Aotearoa section features director Margaret Gordon's tip of the hat to a slice of Christchurch's own musical history, Into the Void and Gerard Smyth's Aunty and the Star People among other local offerings.
Selections fresh from Cannes are represented by films like The Rover, Jimmy's Hall, and Winter Sleep. SXSW fan hit Housebound will also be screened as part of the Christchurch programme.
There's so much more on offer than can be encapsulated in one post, so the best way to find out what's available (and make sure you don't miss out) is to check the website for further details.
