Batman’s uncredited co-creator Bill Finger died 40 years ago never getting to fully experience any of the accolades that he truly deserved. For it is Bill Fingers involvement in creating Batman, the reasons we now know the "Caped Crusader" at all. One of the most iconic symbols in our culture let alone the entire world has been given a false origin story from the very start. It is more then past due time for Bill Finger to finally get what he deserves....CREATOR CREDITS!!
This year is a celebration of Batman’s 75th anniversary and also what would have been Bill Finger’s 100th birthday, a perfect time to fix the history of The Batman. It is high time that things that have been wronged for so many years to finally be made right, once and for all!
July 23, 2014 will be officially known as Batman Day in the world of comic books. Batman who was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger made his debut in 1939 with Detective Comics #27. Batman later received a self-titled comic book series in 1940. On "Batman Day" the entire comic book industry will celebrate Batmans 75th Anniversary! DC Comics, for the special event will be releasing a free comic book at participating comic book shops. A special reprint of the original Detective Comics #27 with loads of extras inside will come with a cover by Greg Capullo (Batman, Spawn). The book will also showcase something that will be the first of its kind. A very special co-creator credit (for the very first time in DC history) that will be given to Bill Finger on the cover itself of the special DC Comics New 52 Batman Detective Comics #27!
Who is Bill Finger you ask? Well folks Bill Finger is the man who created Batman!
"No! That's not correct!" you say?
Well let us take a look at the achievements and collaborative ideas from Mr. Finger and the you can decide for yourself if you think he helped co-create Batman or if HE himself created the figure that we all know and love......The Dark Knight!
As Nerdy fact points out (above) many of the very characteristics and symbols used for Batman were IN FACT brought forth by Bill Finger himself. Things like the Batcave, Robin, Joker and even the Batmobile were inspired by Mr. Finger.
Below is a funny cartoon that has been on the internet for some time showing what if Bob Kane's Batman would have looked like. Bob Kane, the actual credited "sole creator" of Batman had a diffrent take on what his "Bat-Man" should have looked liked. This "Bat-Man" of Kane did not have all the iconic symbols and characteristics that we now take for granted as the comic book lore of the Detective.
It would seem to me that the both of them worked very well with each other in a collaborative capacity and the both of them together created magic together! But the facts are also there how Bill Finger was the one who helped shape the Batman we know now. It is also well known that Bob Kane bought out Fingers interest in Batman and then Bob Kane himself took SOLE CREDITS for the whole creation of Batman and many of his greatest known comic book landmarks from that point forth. It does look like 40 years after the controversial beginnings that things may finally come to a change at this years SDCC. A very special panel will search for the answer......"who really created Batman?" (Read my other article on this)
The original Detective Comics #27
Below is a Bill Finger Bio on his life and work.
It was very gracious for DC Comics to finally give Mr. Finger a credit on a Batman comic book with the special free comic book day Detective #27. This is also not the first time DC Comics had given a tribute to Mr. Finger. The one posted below is one of the most touching and does speak volumes after the passing of Mr. finger.
There is a lot to Bill's personal life that I will not get into here in this blog, that is not what this article is about. This is a celebration of his life and his many un-credited accomplishments. If you would like to learn more about the person that is Bill Finger, I would then recommend that you check out these fine books i have posted below.
I highly urge you, be it on Batman Day or just the very next time you think of Batman. Please........do not forget the name Bill Finger! For Bill Finger is the main reason the Batman you so love and admire so much is the figure you know now. For it is Bill Finger who is the lost man in Batman's true history!
