The long-awaited confirmation of Sony's next two films in it's $4 billion Spiderman franchise is here -- hours away from preview night of San Diego Comic-Con! Deadline reports that Sony has dated Drew Goddard's [Sinister Six](movie:1274281) film for November 11, 2016, with The Amazing Spiderman 3 following in 2018.
So far, a few of the names attached to the film are Goddard, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing what seems to be Sony's own in-house expansion on non-Spidey characters. After worries within the fandom that the Sinister Six movie would never make it past the planning stages, the news is both welcome and slightly refreshing.
“With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” said Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group prexy Doug Belgrad.
This particular writer is more than excited that comic book movies seem to be gradually moving away from the Big Names within comics, giving movie fans a chance to meet lesser-known characters and follow the labyrinth of storylines that makes reading comic books so exciting. One of my favorite things about comics is the adventure of catching up with your favorite hero and following them through parallel universes, alternate dimensions, and memorable ensemble crossovers. With any luck, Sony will treat the Sinister six with the respect they deserve and we'll see even more titles emerging from them soon.
