The History of Batman:
1939 - Batman debuts along with Commissioner Jim Gordon in May.
July: The utility belt is first spotlighted.
September: The Batarang is introduced.
November: The murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne is recounted.
1940 - Batman battles Hugo Strange for the first time in February.
April: Dick Grayson joins Batman as the first Robin after his trapeze artist parents are murdered.
Spring: The Joker and Catwoman make their first appearance in Batman's new title, and Batman vows not to use firearms. (Batman #1)
Fall: Batman joins Superman in the debut issue of World's Best Comics.
1941 - Gotham City is named in Winter.
1942 - The Batsignal debuts.
1943 - Alfred arrives.
1947 - The Giant Penny makes its first appearance.
1950 - Deadshot aims at the Bat for the first time.
1954 - Batman and Superman begin a series of team ups in World's Finest Comics #71.
1955 - Ace the Bat-Hound debuts.
1959 - Batman and Bat-Mite meet for the first time.
1960 - To defeat Starro the Conqueror, Batman teams up with other superheroes to form the Justice League of America. (The Brave and the Bold #28)
1964 - Robin forms the Teen Titans, with other sidekicks, such as Kid Flash and Aqualad.
1966 - Poison Ivy debuts, and the Teen Titans get their own ongoing title.
1967 - Barbara Gordon becomes the second Batgirl.
1970 - The League of Assassins debut in Batman's series.
1971 - Talia and Ra's Al Ghul make their first appearances.
1980 - Arkham Asylum makes its debut.
1983 - Jason Todd, Killer Croc, and Harvey Bullock make their first appearances, and Batman leaves the JLA to form the Outsiders.
1984 - Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing to rescue his fellow Titans from Deathstroke the Terminator and the HIVE.
1985 - During the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event, Bat-Mite, Ace the Bat-Hound, and other Bat-characters are forgotten in the new mainstream continuity.
1986 - Frank Miller's miniseries "The Dark Knight Returns" is published.
1987 - Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli publish "Batman: Year One".
1988 - "A Death In the Family" begins, and the Joker shoots and paralyzes Barbara Gordon in "The Killing Joke".
1989 - Jason Todd dies at the conclusion of "Death In the Family", Tim Drake makes his first appearance, and "Gotham By Gaslight" is published, and Tim Burton's "Batman", starring Michael Keaton is released.
1991 - Former Penguin henchman Harold Allnut becomes the Batcave's resident mechanic.
1992 - Jeremiah Arkham, Azrael, and Mr. Zsasz first appear, and Batman Returns, again starring Michael Keaton is released.
1993 - Bane debuts, and "Knightfall" begins, Bane breaks Bruce Wayne's back, and Batman briefly passes on the mantle to Azrael.
1994 - In "KnightsEnd", Batman battles to reclaim the cowl from Azrael, and the next month, Azrael returns it.
1995 - Batman Forever, starring Val Kilmer, is released.
1996 - Kingdom Come is published.
1997 - Batman & Robin, starring George Clooney and Chris O' Donnell as the Dynamic Duo is released.
1999 - Harley Quinn makes her first comic appearance.
2002 - "Hush" begins.
2005 - "Batman Begins", starring Christian Bale is released, and Jason Todd returns as the antihero Red Hood.
2008 - "The Dark Knight", again starring Christian Bale is released.
2011 - In the "Flashpoint" storyline, Thomas Wayne is Batman in an alternate timeline, and the DC universe is rebooted in the New 52, and Batman gets a new costume.
2012 - The third and final Batman film starring Christian Bale, "The Dark Knight Rises", is released.
2016 - Batman will return to the big screen, played by Ben Affleck, to fight the Big Blue Boy Scout for the first time in a live action full length movie.
