Is it because she has honest hips? Is it because her breasts are small and humble? Is it because she performed at the World Cup? Well, whatever the reason, Shakira has now become the most liked person on Facebook - as well as the first celebrity to pass 100 million likes on the social network.
Shakira recently surpassed Eminem and Rihanna who had gained 91.9 million and 89 million fans respectively. The Colombian star had been particularly active online during the recent World Cup in Brazil, which could explain her recent surge to the top. Shakira, who performed at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the widely watched tournament, frequently posted behind the scenes snaps and photos, many of them earning multi-million likes in their own right.
In a statement on her Facebook page, Shakira said she was "honored and humbled" to have reached the milestone. "Social media and specifically Facebook has helped myself and other artists bridge the gap between the stage and the audience." She also added this rather lovely video:
Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg also chipped in with his congratulations, posting on her page, "Congrats! What an amazing milestone for an amazing person."
This might one of the few times I agree with Mark Zuckerberg. Now, as someone who ranks the likes of Nirvana and Creedence Clearwater Revival among their favorite bands, even I can appreciate the incredibly awesome poppiness of Shakira's tunes. In fact, I'm listen to her right now. Throw in the fact she is a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and one hot tamale, I think it's easy to see how she gained 100 million likes.
